Assessment Institutional Effectiveness Committee meeting minutes of April 12

The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness Committee met on April 12, 2022. The meeting minutes are as follows.

Dr. Margaret Geehan opened the meeting at 1 p.m. It was held via Zoom.

Middle States Update
Confirmed Dates:
Preliminary visit by Dr. Michael McDonough and Assistant Sheri Pontarollo — Nov. 6 to 8, 2022.
Evaluation Team Site Visit — April 2 to 5, 2023.

Dr. Geehan reminded committee members that Dr. McDonough and Sheri Pontarollo will be conducting their preliminary Middle States visit with us on November 6-8, 2022. The Evaluation Team site visit, the final Middle States visit for this process, will take place from April 2-5, 2023.

Survey Updates
The Advisor Surveys — Student, Advisor, DC — were out and in progress. The Student Advisement Satisfaction Survey will close at the end of the semester, but the Advisor and DC versions will remain open for awhile to give respondents more time to complete them after the end-of-semester busyness subsides.

The ESS Survey Results will be coming out soon to the group and to the campus community. Dr. Geehan said she was working on the ESS Summary Report.

During discussion, the group agreed that, where possible, the surveys should be shorter and the questions simpler. However, since Middle States was coming next year, there shouldn’t be any major changes to the survey for comparability sake.

The SUNY Portal Data was also discussed.

Review 2022 IE Report

Core Indicator 2.3
Core Indicator 2.1
Core Indicator 2.2
2.3.2 — “Retention of First-Time, Full-Time Students at SUNY Peer Institutions” Hector Rodriguez suggested getting data on our percentage of students who are 18-24 versus older adults compared to other community colleges in order to better assess whether older, nontraditional students have higher retention rates. This is available IPEDs data through the SUNY Portal.

The group looked at the Table for 2.3.3. This table showed the Retention Data for First-Time, Full Time Students for HVCC VS local community colleges. 2.3.4 compares us to SUNY Community Colleges without FIT.

Up to this part of the report, HVCC met all the requirements.

The group discussed whether to measure retention by ethnicity or not, in relation to Strategy 3.2.1.

Retention of the First-Time, Full-Time students at HVCC is above average compared to other SUNY Institutions.

A college in a town or city with a more diverse population has a better chance of reaching a more diverse group of students and being able to connect with them, even if it doesn’t necessarily put more effort into doing so.

3.2.2 — Retention of Full-Time, First-Time students compared to SUNY peer institutions (community colleges) average retention rates.

3.2.3 — First-Time, Full-Time by race/ethnicity compared to all SUNY community colleges (without FIT) retention rates.

Is “Non-resident Alien” the same as international students? Margaret will find out. As for international students, we may be able to get this data from Jay Deitchman in order to accurately compare these.

3.2.4 — The group paused after this and will pick up here next time.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:58 p.m.

Remaining Spring 2022 meetings — April 26 and May 17.

Respectfully submitted,
