Middle States Update to the Board of Trustees — May 24, 2022

The college’s Middle States liaison recommended the Board of Trustees be updated at each monthly meeting. We thank them for their commitment to the self-study effort. Their attention and support is appreciated.

1) The most commonly failed standards among Community Colleges are Standards 5 & 6. Therefore, we prioritized both these standards in our work this month by focusing first on both of them:
Standard V – Educational Effectiveness Assessment
Standard VI – Planning, Resources, and Institutional Improvement

2) The report requires evidence that we are meeting every criteria of every standard. The best evidence is direct evidence which shows how we identify and prioritize challenges, then use our policies and shared governance to apply resources in a deliberate way to address a problem. Just as necessary is evidence of our assessment of the effectiveness of the initiatives, assessments which drive the reallocation of resources away from projects which do not work, and efficiently supplying personnel and capital to programs which are effective.

Unfortunately, this type of direct evidence is not available for certain criteria. For these requirements, we must rely on indirect evidence that we adhere to transparent and inclusive methods to continually improve. We continue to search for, and will include in the report the most direct and best evidence available.
