DeAnne Martocci, MS, CPACC, director, and Ann Petersen, coordinator of accessibility, in the Center for Access and Assistive Technology, attended the spring conference of the New York State Disability Services Council (NYSDSC) held June 28 to 30 in Syracuse.
The event marked Martocci’s transition from president-elect to president of the organization that represents disability staff at all SUNY, CUNY and independent colleges in New York State. She will serve a one-year term.
Petersen was elected SUNY Sector member-at-large. In that role, she will engage with other SUNY institutions and SUNY System Administration regarding disability issues from a system perspective. She will have input in many topics that come up within the SUNY Sector.
Martocci and Petersen also presented a conference session, entitled “Help! I Am Not a Teacher for the Visually Impaired!” The pair explained the CAAT’s process when working with students who are blind or have low vision, including how access to academic content is provided using tactile images. Petersen demonstrated how to make a tactile image using a device called a tactile image enhancer.
