As previously announced, the Center for Distance and Online Learning replaced the Turnitin Blackboard integration for summer, and it will be fully deployed for the Fall 2022 semester. Please review the timeline and details, including the reason for the update. On Aug. 16, 2022, the Blackboard Turnitin Basic Building Block will be set to “Inactive,” and only the new LTI 1.3 integration is available.
Why do we need to migrate off Blackboard Learn Building Blocks (what we are using now)?
As part of Turnitin’s commitment to providing the best customer experience and helping you get the most out of their solutions, they will be retiring the Blackboard Basic (what we were using) Building Block at the end of the current academic year. You will continue to have access to all the Turnitin Feedback Studio features.
Timeline and Details
For summer, we ran both the Turnitin Blackboard Learn Building Block integration (old) and the LTI 1.3 integration (new) as we completed the transition to the new integration.
DONE: May 11, 2022: The Turnitin LTI 1.3 (new) integration will be in use on the Blackboard system.
DONE: May 16, 2022: Turnitin Basic Building Block (old) will be set to Unavailable.
What is the current experience now that the Basic Building Block (old) is Unavailable?
- Existing Basic assignments will continue to work
- New Basic assignments can no longer be created
- Basic assignments will successfully copy creating new assignments
NEXT STEP: Aug. 16, 2022
The Turnitin Basic Building Block (old) will be set to Inactive.
What will I experience when the Turnitin Basic Building Block is Inactive?
- Existing Basic assignments will no longer be accessible via Blackboard Learn
- New Basic assignments can no longer be created
- Basic assignments will copy but not work
What do I need to do for my Turnitin Assignments to work?
- Recreate old Turnitin Assignments using the “new” Turnitin LTI 1.3 integration
- Any new Turnitin Assignments created will use the new integration
- Turnitin Tutorials (Please make sure you select Original View.)
- In Blackboard, locate Turnitin Assignment under Build Content.
How can I access existing Turnitin assignments once the Blackboard Learn Building Block (old) has been made Inactive?
Once Inactive, all old Turnitin assignment links between Blackboard and Turnitin will break. However, all Turnitin assignments created via the Blackboard Learn Building Block (old) will continue to exist via the Turnitin website. Instructors will need to use the password reset option, along with their HVCC email address, to create a password to use for accessing all their past assignments and submissions.
Aug. 31, 2022: Turnitin End of Support
At this point, Turnitin will no longer be supporting the Basic Building Block (old), and you can only access past assignments and submissions via Blackboard.
Aug. 31, 2023: End of Functionality
On this date, access to the Turnitin assignments via the Blackboard Learn Building Block (old) will no longer be available. You can access past assignments and submissions available via Turnitin.com.
Please submit a ticket for any issues you may encounter throughout this transition.
