WiFi Hotspots going like hotcakes

Earlier this summer, the Dwight Marvin Library was awarded $20,000 from the American Libraries Association COVID Relief Fund to purchase and loan WiFi hotspots to address challenges faced by students to access online resources offered by the library and by other academic support services.  Students who are parents of dependent children are the priority student cohort served by the initiative.  Full details appeared in a Aug. 1 Chronicle post.

More than 50 students have responded so far to direct mailings inviting them to reserve a hotspot for the Fall semester.  The library began lending the devices on Monday and more than 20 have been loaned to eager students. Many students are borrowing a Chromebook at the same time, receiving a nifty package of hardware and data for the full semester at no cost. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6, any hotspots still available will be available to any students on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Know a student who is a parent and may benefit from having a hotspot? Visit the Library’s Hotspot Lending Service page to complete the brief online reservation form and stop by during business hours to borrow a device. Students who are parents of dependent children are urged to borrow before close of business on Friday, Sept. 2! Devices are expected to be in high demand during the week of Sept. 6 when any student may borrow one.

Note that this is a student initiative and employees* are ineligible to borrow hotspots.

*Employees who are students are eligible!
