Fundraiser to Support Our Veterans

On May 22, I will join 2,500 other runners to participate in “The Run to Home Base 9K” in Boston. The race itself snakes through Boston and Cambridge with the finish line inside Fenway Park.

The run honors veterans and raises money for The Run to Home Base Program, a collaborative effort with the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts general-news Hospital. It provides psychiatric care and community outreach for the many veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with combat stress disorders and/or traumatic brain injuries.

I was a spectator at this race last year, which raised moret han $2.5 million in support of the troops and their families. I watched last May as battalions ran together in full garb to honor their fellow soldiers. I saw many soldiers, home from the wars, cross home plate triumphantly. There were also hundreds of other runners challenging themselves in support of the troops. After the race, the concourse of Fenway was transformed into a post office with volunteers, runners and their families helping to fill thousands of care packages to be shipped overseas.

I was awed by the day and promised myself that I would participate next year. I have committed myself to running –this has been no small task with this horrible winter — and to raising a minimum of $1,000. Please consider donating to my fund-raising effort and to helping me support these soldiers as they battle the wounds of war we can’t always see.
