Prepare your Summer and Fall courses on Blackboard 9.1 !!!

Summer and Fall 2011 course shells have been created in Blackboard 9.1! That means that you can now prepare your courses in Blackboard 9.1 at https://bbtrain.hvcc.edu.

Summer 2011 online courses will start on Tuesday, May 24th (instead of Monday) in order to allow for the switch over from Blackboard 8 to Blackboard 9.1.

Once your courses are prepared in Blackboard 9.1 you will not need to move them again, since this is the area which will go live and where the students will be enrolled for the summer and fall.

When you go to the Blackboard 9.1 web site, you will get a prompt which says:

‘there is a problem with this web site’s security certificate.’

To move past this, please click on ‘Continue to this website (not recommended).’ Even though it says, ‘not recommended’, this is indeed what you need to do! (This prompt will disappear once we ‘go live’ in the summer).

Although you will see your course shells in Blackboard 9.1, THERE IS NO DATA THERE. You must export and import any courses that you would like to move from Blackboard 8 to Blackboard 9.1. (This includes Z areas).

There are a few important things you need to do BEFORE Exporting from Blackboard 8 and Importing into Blackboard 9.1:

 Remove HTML tags from course menu items, such as font tags, horizontal rule tags, bold tags, etc.)

 Either remove date restrictions from Announcements or do not export/import old announcements

 Change course menu from buttons to links – especially important for Firefox users, you will not have full functionality of course menu editing tools.

Here is the checklist for importing from Bb8 to Bb9.1:

There are significant differences between Bb 8 and Bb 9.1 so we highly recommend training. The Distance Learning Center is available for training in a variety of ways:

1. One-on’one by appointment (email Bonnie Farrell at b.farrell@hvcc.edu or call 629-8197)

2. Walk ‘in (Distance Learning Center in BTC 1042)

3. Scheduled Workshops: Training Calendar: https://www.hvcc.edu/deptweb-dlweb/calendar.html.

4. Departmental or Special Groups by request

5. Webinar format for those who live at a distance

6. Evening training available by appointment

Z area export/import and clean up:

As part of the upgrade from Bb8 to Bb 9.1, all data that you want needs to be moved from Bb8 to Bb9.1. This includes your Z areas (development or storage areas). There are a few important things you need to know about Z areas.

1. All faculty have a Z ZZZ_555 development area in Bb 9.1. This was created as a sandbox for Bb 9.1 training.

2. All faculty have a ZZZZ_999 development area in Bb 9.1. This was automatically created as a blank area associated with your username. You can use this for anything that you want.

3. We recommend you look over the contents of your Z areas in Bb8, and only move over the things that you will need into Bb 9.1. It is a good time to ‘clean up’ your Z areas.

4. If you need more Z areas created please email the Distance and Online Learning Help Desk at DLHelp@hvcc.edu

5. We recommend that you ask us to create the new Z areas based on the old Z areas so it will be easy to move the old into the new. For example if you are currently using Z areas named 997, 998 and 999, we recommend that your new Z areas be named the same.

Please contact the Center for Distance and Online Learning for any help you may need to move your courses from Bb 8 to Bb 9.1. We are standing by!!!
