On Aug. 17, members of the Honors College continued the annual tradition of volunteering at the Northeast Regional Food Bank in Latham before the start of the fall semester. This is a special opportunity for students in the new cohort and the returning students to meet each other and it exemplifies two important pillars of the Honors College: service and fellowship.
The students worked seamlessly together unpacking boxes of donated produce, including grapes, bananas, strawberries, peaches, lettuce, and potatoes. They carefully inspected the items and sorted them into packages which would then be available the next day in their distribution center. At the distribution center, patrons are welcome to come and pick up the packed items and deliver them to local agencies. With food insecurity on the rise in many communities, these items are a welcome relief. The work of sorting and packing all of the donated food is a worthy task, and the work the students and other volunteers did that day was equivalent to what 30 full-time food bank employees could do! The volunteer job done, the students then enjoyed ice cream and socialized at the Control Tower Ice Cream Shop.
