Dwyght Mack, a second-year student in Hudson Valley’s Business Administration degree program, participated in the University of Denver’s Accounting Scholars Development Program this past August. Mack received a full program scholarship, awarded to outstanding African-American, Hispanic or Native American students with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and with As in accounting subjects.
The week-long program was designed to increase awareness of careers in accounting, improve students’ personal financial literacy and guide students through the process of transferring to institutions that offer degree programs that meet the educational requirements for CPA licensing.
One of only 35 students to be accepted into the program, Mack had the opportunity to meet and talk with CEOs and CFOs of the top accounting firms located in Denver: KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and Price-Waterhouse. He worked on a juried case study in which students determined whether it was a smart financial move for KPMG to invest in purchasing a smaller fictitious accounting firm. Students had to outline the financial risks involved for KPMG and determine if and how the risks could be overcome. Students personally consulted with KPMG associates and showcased their findings in a Power Point presentation. Mack also participated in seminars focused on obtaining maximum financial aid for continued schooling, personal financial health and the benefits of an MBA, as well as an etiquette dinner.
A native of New York City and currently a Troy resident, Mack began his college career at Morrisville State College where he obtained a degree in Automotive Technology. He came to Hudson Valley to take some basic business courses and went on to pursue a business degree with a focus on accounting. Following his graduation from Hudson Valley, Mack hopes to transfer to State University of New York at Oswego for his bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Mack says that he has been “extremely pleased” with his decision to attend Hudson Valley and credits Andrew Miller, an assistant professor in accounting, and James Williams, department chairperson for accounting and marketing and the Business Advisement Center, for assisting him in attending this program and supporting his educational endeavors.
