Pi Day: Celebrate the Irrational on 3.14

Pi, Greek letter ( π ), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

Pi = 3.1415926535…

Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14 (or 3/14).

With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating.

Pi Day is a holiday commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi). Larry Shaw created Pi Day in 1988. The holiday was celebrated at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where Shaw worked as a physicist, with staff and visitors marching around one of its circular spaces and then consuming fruit pies.  The Exploratorium continues to hold Pi Day celebrations.

In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day.
