Message from Public Safety

As we complete the first weeks of the Fall 2012 semester, I wish to welcome students and to remind them of some important safety and parking tips.

When driving to / from campus, please drive carefully; slow down and try to avoid distracted driving, ie: use of cell phones without hands-free hearing devices is illegal and frequently causes accidents. Texting while driving,is similarly, very dangerous.

Approaching from the south, on the Rt 4 corridor (from I-90), seems to be the most efficient way of getting to campus, especially during peak morning rush hour. Coming in from 787, up the Morrison hill, will lead to more traffic. When going home in the afternoon, making the left on to Rt. 4, will avoid the traffic down to 787.  Access to I-90 is only a matter of two miles and a few minutes, with little traffic. (Electronic signs not only are guiding students/staff to parking but are also reminding students to turn left onto Rt. 4, upon exit).

The parking garage, on South Road, has three dedicated areas for faculty-staff, on levels 2,3,and 4, accessible only with an electronic hang-tag; students SHOULD NOT PARK in the faculty/staff areas. Pulling up to the electronic gates will only cause traffic and confusion.

All other areas in the garage are available to students (almost 500 spaces). During peak times this past week, most parking lots and the new garage have been full, with spaces becoming gradually available as the afternoons approached.

Motorcycle parking spaces are available on the first floor of the garage, West side.

When lots and the garage are full, there is some limited parking in the parking lot across the street from HVCC (at Rt. 4 and South Rd.)at the former Grove restaurant.

PLEASE BE CERTAIN TO REGISTER YOUR CAR AND OBTAIN A PARKING DECAL AT GUENTHER HALL. AFTER A GRACE PERIOD WHICH WILL END ON/OR ABOUT 9/30, PARKING TICKETS WILL BE ISSUED TO VIOLATORS.

Drive carefully: slow down and be careful when backing out of parking spaces and on turns. Obey traffic regulations; local Police and Peace Officers from my staff will be issuing tickets for moving violations.

Be alert to the continuing construction of the new Science Building, on South Rd. Construction vehicles are regularly coming and going.

Also, please park in legal areas. Do not park on grass, sidewalks; do not block other cars; again, be alert to traffic.

Do not park in the TJ Maxx / Price Chopper Plaza, across from HVCC.  If you are not actually shopping in the stores, your vehicle will be towed.

Please lock your car and be alert as you exit your vehicle. Be aware of your surroundings while walking on campus. Bright lighting and use of glass in the stairwells / elevator of the garage is a safety hallmark but you still need to always be vigilant.

Secure valuable items such as lap-top computers. Report thefts and other incidents promptly. Sign up your I phone, Ipad, etc. with the GPS location services; this is helpful in recovering the items when lost or stolen. Video coverage of the campus is extensive and can help in investigations of theft, but it is only saved for a period of days to a week, depending on location.

Be certain to pay attention to e-mail alerts; sign up for NY Alert and follow us on Twitter at “hvpublicsafety” for regular announcements; these Twitter announcements are also viewed on the many large TV monitors that have recently been installed throughout campus buildings.

Take advantage of our escort service by calling our office at 629-7210. Also, we unlock cars as well as providing jump starts, FOR FREE.

Be safe and have a great year!
