EOC graduate Mfon Bassey received a $500 scholarship from the New York State Black, Latino and Asian Legislative Caucus during a reception held at the Albany EOC on Sept. 25, 2012. Bassey, originally from Nigeria, came to the United States in 2009. She completed EOC’s Nursing Assistant program in January 2011 and was hired by St. Peter’s Healthcare partners.
With the assistance of EOC’s College Connections department, Bassey applied to Hudson Valley Community College. The College Connections department then encouraged Bassey to apply for scholarships, including the inaugural New York State Black, Latino and Asian Legislative Caucus award, which was provided with the assistance from Syracuse Assemblyman Sam Roberts.
“The scholarship was for someone who showed initiative, but who didn’t go the regular route, they had struggled in life, but were determined to do well,” explained the Honorable Carolyn McLaughlin, President of the Albany Common Council. McLaughlin presented the award to Bassey during the Sept. 25 awards reception.
Selection criteria for the scholarship included the completion of some college work, with plans to continue, merit, character and academics.
“The EOC is a place where you can’t go wrong,” Bassey said, “I have seen people helped in class and with other services.”
