A new semester begins.
A new year of possibilities, hopes, dreams, goals and challenges.
In this new year, may we remain hope-filled despite the challenges that face us.
And as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., may we treat each other with dignity despite our differences: whether it be the color of our skin, our political persuasions, religious beliefs or socio-economic status. May we seek the common values that unite us rather than divide us so that goodness can shine forth in everything we do as a society.
Inaugurations remind us of our common bonds in this great and diverse land. Here are a few words from yesterday’s presidential inauguration to remind us:
One sun rose on us today, kindled over our shores,
peeking over the Smokies, greeting the faces
of the Great Lakes, spreading a simple truth
across the Great Plains, then charging across the Rockies.
One light, waking up rooftops, under each one, a story
told by our silent gestures moving across windows.
