Nominate your “A” papers for the Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research

This academic year’s deadline for faculty submission of student research papers in all academic departments will be Friday, April 25, 2014.

For those faculty who may be new to HVCC, the Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research is selected annually by the Dwight Marvin Library faculty and recognizes a student’s outstanding accomplishment in library-based research. This is a very prestigious award, comes with a monetary sum of $150, the student’s name on a perpetual plaque in the Marvin Library and recognition at the Students Honors Convocation and in the commencement program.  Being chosen for this award looks wonderful on a student’s transfer application, job application.

While this notice may seem a bit early, it may assist faculty in spring 2014 planning. Plus, this time frame is necessary to allow for inclusion at Student Honors Convocation and commencement.

To be eligible, a student must be nominated by the faculty member for whom the research assignment was completed. The work nominated must have received a grade of “A” from the nominating faculty member.

Award selection criteria are as follows:

  • Extensive bibliography with minimum of five sources and a variety of formats, including but not limited to:
  1. books in hard copy or electronic format
  2. scholarly journal articles
  3.  magazine and/or newspaper articles
  4. reputable websites
  5. primary sources (such as interviews, diaries, speeches, and, newspaper articles!)
  • Evidence of initiative, persistence, and ingenuity in identifying sources
  • Evidence of critical thinking in evaluating sources for credibility and appropriateness
  • Correct citation format (Improper citations often disqualify a submission. Please stress to your students that correct MLA, APA, and/or Chicago Manual format is a must to be eligible for this award!)
  • Free of plagiarism – authentic work required

Dr. Bulmer established the award in 1989 when he was president of the college. The library has continued the tradition for over 20 years by selecting multiple winners, who received modest awards and recognition. In 2009-10, one award of $150 was instituted from a fund managed by the college’s Foundation for the specific purpose of recognizing library research excellence.

Eligible papers received from faculty after the April 25, 2014 due date may be submitted for consideration for the 2014-15 award. Additionally, research papers which were graded or submitted after the 2012-2013 (April 26) deadline may be submitted for the 2013-14 Bulmer Award, if still available to the faculty member. We will make certain every deserving paper is reviewed and considered!

Papers should be submitted to Valerie Waldin in MRV 127 or Delia Hubbard in GUN 227.
