Food Pantry Thanksgiving “boxing match”

I’d like to begin by giving thanks to everyone who has donated, even one item, to the food pantry. I spoke with Sue Smith and was told that the shelves are well stocked. With that said, Thanksgiving is fast approaching and a little extra may give some student families a more enjoyable holiday meal.

If you’re already in the food pantry competition or if you’d like to join the competition, get ready for your first “boxing match.”

From now through Tuesday, Nov. 26, we are asking participants to put together a non-perishable Thanksgiving dinner. These “boxed” dinners will be judged by the Office of the Dean of Liberal Arts and Health Sciences. The winner will receive 25 items from the History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences donations.

The rules:

–Make a list of the items that have been collected and are included in your “boxed” dinner. E-mail the list to k.haynes@hvcc.edu. Also, please include the count of the items.

Get your items to the food pantry before noon on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

You will only be judged on the items, not the count, though the count will go toward your department’s tally. Be as creative as you want– folks may not be as traditional as you think over in the dean’s office.

The winner will be announced after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Any questions, please call me at 629-7690 or e-mail me at k.haynes@hvcc.edu.

Here are the most current stats by department.

Admissions – 283
Biology, Chemistry and Physics – 42*
Continuing Ed – 47
Dental Hygiene – 300*
English and Foreign Languages – 572
Human Services – 85
Individual Studies – 32
Learning Assistance Center – 194
Math and Engineering Sciences – 593
Mortuary Sciences – 20*

Looks like English and Math are neck and neck for the lead. This is a long match, though, and it’s not too late for any department to steal the lead away. We’d love more participation if you haven’t already signed up!
