Foundation Friday: Second Chance for first-rate student

Hudson Valley Community College is an open access institution that offers students the ability to begin or continue their higher education, advance their career or start a new business. For some adult students, making the decision to return to school is one that will require many sacrifices: less time to spend with the kids, irregular work hours to accommodate class schedules and tight budgets for their family.

The Foundation offers many different scholarship opportunities, one of which is the Second Chance Scholarship, which is aimed at students who not only are in need, but who overcome tremendous personal obstacles in order to pursue an education. One of this year’s recipients is Kelley-Jean LaCroix ’14.

When Kelley decided to return to school, she knew it would not be easy. LaCroix, a divorced mother of four adult children, enrolled in the Dental Hygiene program after 20 years of working in factories, as a waitress and in banking. Now a senior, LaCroix is known for her ability, grace and quick wit among her colleagues, teachers and patients. A few weeks ago, Judith DiLorenzo, department chair for the Dental Hygiene program, received a letter from a case patient of LaCroix’s. The letter praised Kelley for her gentle demeanor and affability — skills that cannot be taught in the classroom.

Kelley LaCroix is just one of many Hudson Valley success stories. Applications for Foundation scholarships will be available in January. Please think about the outstanding students you know and encourage them to apply for one of the more than 150 scholarships available. See the scholarship web site at www.hvcc.edu/scholarships for application details and deadlines.
