Fire safety reminders

Welcome back!

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety reminds everyone on campus to be mindful of the following fire safety issues:

  1. Keep all exits and means of egress free of items;
  2. Do not block fire extinguishers
  3. Power strips, extension cords, refrigerators and portable heaters must be plugged directly in to wall outlets;
  4. Extension cords are for temporary use only; no house hold extension cords are allowed on campus. For more information on extension cord safety, see the fact sheet;
  5. Stored item must have 18″ of ceiling clearance in buildings with sprinklers and 24″ of ceiling clearance in buildings with no sprinkler system;
  6. Burning of candles, incenses or sparklers is prohibited;
  7. When cooking, especially popcorn, do not leave  food unattended;
  8. When you hear or see the fire alarm, immediately gather your items and leave the building; do not re-enter the building until given the “All Clear” by Public Safety or the Fire Department.

For additional information, please go to the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Web page or call the office at 629-7787 or 629-7163. Watch for more safety tips from the EHS office!
