Battle Buddy plaque presentation

WNYT New Channel 13 was on campus on March 7 to cover the New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. presentation of a Battle Buddy Center plaque. Read/view the coverage here.

The presentation took place in the Armed Forces Study Room on the second floor of the Marvin Library Learning Commons.

Among those scheduled to attend:

  • Ron Romano, NYSID president & CEO
  • President Drew Matonak
  • Col. Eric Hesse, director, and Todd Rosenfield, project manager with the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs
  • Carrie Farley, founding member of the Armed Forces Club and president of the American Gold Star Mothers, Albany Chapter
  • Student veteran members of  our Armed Forces Club

Battle Buddy Centers are based on the military concept of a “Battle Buddy,” which partners members of the military to assist each other both in and out of combat.

Known as the Armed Forces Study Room, HVCC’s Battle Buddy Center is dedicated in memory of Staff Sergeant Derek Farley who was killed in action in Afghanistan. His mother, Carrie, was instrumental in the opening of the Armed Forces Study Room, which serves as a home for student veterans, providing a space for quiet study where student veterans can get away from the hustle and bustle of campus.

NYSID’s Battle Buddy Centers have collectively hosted more than 3,000 visits by veterans since September 2011; HVCC alone has hosted nearly 700 veteran visits since its opening on November 15, 2012. HVCC’s Battle Buddy Center was made possible through grant funding from NYSID and support from The Altamont Program, Inc. in Schenectady.
