Foundation Friday: a truly transformative gift

The EMS and Paramedic Department received a generous gift-in-kind donation of an ambulance interior designed with every detail of an actual ambulance to provide the perfect environment for hands-on-training for students and assessment by instructors.

The simulator frame was designed and built by faculty member Brent Ricks. The donation of the interior adds realism to student practice. It is setup in a classroom with cameras to monitor student activity from outside. This allows instructors to create very similar experiences for students during their labs and later evaluations.

Patty Hyland, department chair for Cardiorespiratory, Polysomnography and Emergency Medicine Programs, said, “This donation, as well as the hard work, of Brent Ricksnow allows our students to truly understand the constraints of caring for patients inside the limited space of an ambulance.” This wonderful gift was made possible by department instructor Gregory Vis and his company, Hudson Simulations Services.

The Foundation acts as the agent through which non-cash donations are channeled. If you are approached by someone who wants to donate a non-cash item (often referred to as a “gift-in-kind”) to the college, please check with your department or program chair to see if the proposed contribution is an item that fits our educational mission.

If your department or program chair agrees that the item would be useful, s/he needs to fill out a Non-Monetary Donation form which can be found online at https://www.hvcc.edu/foundation/non-monetary-donation.pdf. Please note that instructions for filling out the form are located on the third page of the document. Also, this form must be signed by the department/program chair, the supervising dean/director, the appropriate vice president, the Vice President of Finance and the President (in that order) before the item can be accepted. If you have questions about non-monetary donations or gifts-in-kind, please contact Kim Berry at 629-8007.

The Foundation is here to support your efforts; please call (629-8012) or stop by (400 Jordan Road) if you have any questions or suggestions.
