“Out of Print” on exhibit in Marvin Library

“Out of Print,” a fresh look at books and printed materials through the eyes of artists as they reflect upon the past and uncertain future of these information mediums, is on view in the Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation Atrium of the Marvin Library Learning Commons through September 19.

The artists — Fern Apfel, Cara Barer, Doug Beube, Doug Manchee, Scott McCarney, Fawn Potash and Robert The — manipulate and document existing books to create new book forms and structures. Also included are artists’ books from the Women’s Studio Workshop.

Each artist treats books and print materials differently: as found objects and relics, as flawed systems for information delivery, or as simple raw materials. Their queries allow us to see books anew – as subjects and objects of art – expanding their shelf lives for just a moment longer through interpretation and inspiration.

Hudson Valley acknowledges the Albany Public Library for allowing Out of Print to be reconceived for the Marvin Library Learning Commons. The exhibition originally was curated by Judie Gilmore for the 2013 Winter Art Exhibition at the Pine Hills Branch of the Albany Public Library. For more information about current Albany Public Library exhibitions, please visit www.albanypubliclibrary.org/art.

“Out of Print” is open during regular library hours.
