A Kidney for Dylan?

Please see the message below from my friend whose son is in dire need of a kidney transplant:

Dear folks,

Our son, Dylan (N1UKP), had his annual kidney transplant review yesterday in Burlington, VT.  The good news is that he is a continued go for a kidney transplant holding his own.  The bad news is that because of the many blood transfusions that he has had, he has a rejection index of 76% meaning that of all the kidneys that become available he would NOT be a match for an average of 76% of them. There is, however, the possibility of kidney swaps from across the US.

Dylan has been on dialysis for over four years and on the transplant waiting list since starting.

Today on dialysis again, Dylan had three big seizures, so I am now posting suggestions on various organization web sites of which I am a member, like Veterans For Peace, amateur radio, family and personal contacts, etc., that a kidney is needed by Dylan. There are in the USA 91,000 people waiting for a kidney and only 20,000 donor kidneys available per year. Because of the many blood transfusions that Dylan has had he is in the 76 percentile rejection pool. This means that of all the kidneys that ARE available 76% would be ruled out as they would most likely be rejected. Thus, the multiple swap possibility becomes a probable preferred option.

Single or multiple kidney donation swaps can be done if a donor’s kidney is not a match for Dylan but is for someone else waiting for one and that someone else has a donor that is not a match for them but is for Dylan. This swapping is managed by the kidney transplant team.  The swap can take place as a three-way or greater.

If you know someone who might be interested, even in the slightest, in donating a kidney to our 26-year old son, Dylan, including the possibility of multiple swapping, then please call Toby Rockwood, R.N., B.S.N., C.C.M, at the Fletcher Allen Transplant Department (Burlington VT) at 802-847-4774 for more information and details.  And pass this along please to any possible folk that might even give it some consideration.

Thank you,

P.S. For those who do not know, I gave Dylan a kidney back in 1991 and that failed back in 2007.
