Each year, the Historical Society of the New York Court System offers a $1,000 scholarship prize for SUNY and CUNY community college students on a certain topic. This year, the topic is LGBT: THE ROAD TO EQUALITY / How have the New York Courts addressed equal human rights for the LGBT Community.

Faculty members are encouraged to solicit high achieving students for this competition. The winner of the 2008 Garfinkel Prize was HVCC student Elijah Fagan Solis, a Criminal Justice student.
