Office theft at Jordan Road averted; follow basic office safety protocols

On Friday afternoon, Sept. 26, an employee at one of our Jordan Road offices (Workforce Development) saw an intruder carrying her wallet, iPhone, checkbook and other personal items, that had been taken from her office while she was briefly away at the bathroom. She confronted the individual and asked why he had her property. He relinquished the items back to her, after she spoke to him loudly. He then fled the scene.

The intruder was described as a white male, 5’2″, thin build, in his early 20’s,  with a tattoo on his neck. He was last seen entering a blue compact car. Public Safety and North Greenbush police officers immediately responded but the intruder was gone on arrival.
The incident is still under investigation, with some video footage that is still being retrieved / reviewed.

Here are some OFFICE SAFETY TIPS that apply to ALL offices on / off campus:

  • When leaving your office, please be sure to lock it, even if for short periods of time.
  • If the office cannot be locked, lock your valuables (wallet, phone, etc.) in a lockable drawer; or, hide the items and remove them from view.
  • Communicate with fellow office mates; let them know if you are leaving or staying late, expecting visitors, etc.
  • Be alert to unknown individuals in the office area; a simple way to confront one,  would be to ask “How can I help you?”; this would usually scare away the intruder since he now knows that he has been seen.
  • Also, make some noise, ask loudly or yell loudly to not only scare the intruder but also to attract attention from other office mates.
  • Lastly, DO NOT physically confront the intruder. Safety is the priority; let the individual flee and then call 911 immediately and give as best a description as possible to the arriving officers.
