Judge Edward O. Spain will be on campus Monday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. to speak to interested students about the 2015 David A. Garfinkel Essay Scholarship. Judge Spain will be available in the Library Multipurpose Room to answer questions about the award, as well as to inspire and encourage students to apply.
It is a tremendous honor to have this great jurist and role model on our campus. Judge Spain wanted to come to HVCC specifically to encourage students to apply for the David A. Garfinkel Scholarship. Please pass the word that this great man and mentor will be on our campus Oct. 27. He will be accompanied by the Assistant Director of the Historical Society of the New York Courts. Judge Spain graduated from LaSalle Institute, Boston College and Albany Law School. He began his judicial career in 1978 as Troy Police Court Justice, then went on to Family Court Judge, Justice of the Supreme Court, Administrative Judge and retired in 2013 as Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Third Department. Judge Spain’s continuing commitment to bettering the lives of children is evidenced by his membership on the Chief Judge’s Family Violence Task Force, as chair of the Unified Court System’s Statewide Advisory Committee on Attorneys and Children, and as a member of the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Children and the Law. His name is synonymous with character, kindness and commitment to the public good.
- Competition open to all CUNY and SUNY Community College students enrolled during Fall 2014 and/or Spring 2015.
- Students from all academic majors and departments are encouraged to enter.
This award is made available by the Historical Society of the New York Courts and provides CUNY and SUNY community college students with a challenging and rewarding academic opportunity. The scholarship has made prior award recipients stand out in their academic and professional pursuits. The Garfinkel Essay Scholarship can help support students with expenses related to pursuing a college degree.
The topic of the 2015 David A. Garfinkel Essay Scholarship is LGBT: The Road to Equality — How have the New York Courts addressed equal human rights for the LGBT Community?
Deadline: Essays accepted starting December 1, 2014 through April 1, 2015
Awards:
- $1,500 – NYS Community College Grand Prize awarded to a student from either educational system
- $1,000 – CUNY Community College Prize
- $1,000 – SUNY Community College Prize
As it has become an annual tradition, the winners will be honored at the Law Day ceremony at Court of Appeals Hall in Albany, presided over by the Chief Judge of the State of New York and attended by judicial and legislative leaders.
