“It’s On Us” campaign works to put an end to sexual assault on college campuses

The Student Senate recently endorsed a nation-wide awareness campaign to help put an end to sexual assault on college campuses. The ‘It’s On Us” initiative asks everyone to make a personal commitment to step off the sidelines and be part of the solution to end campus sexual assault.

According to White House officials, an estimated one in five women is sexually assaulted during her college years. Of those assaults, only 12 percent are reported and only a fraction of the offenders are punished.

On Monday, Nov. 3, the Student Activities Office and Student Senate will host an information session on the “It’s On Us” Campaign at 3 pm in Siek Campus Center room 150.

The information session will feature a representative from the Sexual Assault and Crime Victims Assistance Program for Rensselaer County. The county agency is committed to reducing the trauma of sexual assault, crime and violence, as well as providing community education for its prevention. This session is part of a semester-long leadership development workshop series. Two related workshops offered earlier this semester, entitled “Domestic Disturbances” and “Social Media and the Bystander Effect” were well attended.

Students, faculty and staff will be encouraged to sign pledge cards of commitment to stop sexual assault through Friday, Nov. 7.
