Students can now enroll in two new certificate programs offered by the college’s Physical Education Department next fall.
The new offerings include a one-year certificate program for those interested in careers as fitness professionals and a 10-credit program that provides certification for those who want to become New York State public high school athletic coaches.
The new one-year Fitness Specialist certificate is a 25-credit program designed for those who want to start a career or are already working in the field and are looking to increase their knowledge and skill in the areas of fitness and nutrition.
After completing this program, graduates will have the knowledge to sit for professional examinations offered by the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Health Professionals, Cooper Institute and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Courses in the certificate will cover nutrition, fitness assessment, fitness program design and weight management. Those interested in starting their own fitness or personal training business can take advantage of courses in entrepreneurship and sports management.
The new Coaching certificate addresses a New York State mandate for those who wish to become a head coach at the modified, junior varsity or varsity level. Core courses in the certificate include “Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education,” “Health Sciences as Applied to Coaching,” “Theory and Techniques of Coaching” and “First Aid/CPR.” Hudson Valley offers all of the courses in an online format and is one of just a handful of SUNY schools to offer the courses as a credit-bearing certificate. It is the only college in the Capital Region to offer a coaching certificate.
Both of the new programs are overseen by the Physical Education Department, which also offers a Physical Education Studies associate degree. For more information about these new certificate programs, contact the Physical Education Department at (518) 629-7366.
