Why are we making such a big deal over women and heart disease?

Well, let me show you why.  If these statistics don’t get at least one “wow” out 0f you I’ll be very surprised:

  • Under age 50, women’s heart attack’s are twice as likely to be fatal than men!
  • 42% of women who have heart attacks die within 1 year, compared to 24% of men.
  • Women wait longer than men to go to an emergency room when having a heart attack and physicians are slower to recognize the presence of heart attacks in women because “characteristic” patterns of chest pain and EKG changes are less frequently present.

  • Men’s plaque distributes in clumps whereas women’s distributes more evenly throughout artery walls. This results in women’s angiographic studies being misinterpreted as “normal”.
  • Women are two to three times as likely to die following heart bypass surgery. Younger aged women between the ages of 40-59 are up to four times more likely to die from heart bypass surgery than men the same age.
  • Only about 25% of participants in heart related studies are women.
  • Women are twice as likely as men to die within the first few weeks after suffering a heart attack.

So, there you go.  Heart disease is a BIG deal for women!  But, one statistic that I like very much is that for some reason a woman’s body responds much better than a man’s when lifestyle changes are made.  Now that’s great news!  The remaining articles this week will focus on the risk factors that are in our control.  I already referenced smoking but we have more to look at.

I really think it’s important to get this information out there, don’t you?  Donating to the Go Red For Women Campaign will do just that.  Please don’t wait.  Find out who the closest representative is to your office and do your part to help the American Heart Association get the word out.   This money will also go to better research for women and heart disease as well.  Sad, but true…good intentions don’t accomplish anything.  I ask again, please don’t wait.
