Underground Railroad History Project Conference is April 17-19

 

This year’s Underground Railroad History Project conference is hosted by Russell Sage College. All are welcome; registration is required. Here’s the announcement from project co-founder Mary Liz Stewart:

This year’s conference centers on the theme Breaking Free: Civil War, Emancipation, and Beyond.” The conference will be held April 17-19, both at Russell Sage College and at the Myers Residence in Albany. Leading scholars present current research in areas related to the abolitionist and civil rights movements from the 19th century to the present.

Conference speakers include Dr. Alan Singer, recipient of the Mark Rothman Teacher Mentoring Award in 2011 and Professor of Secondary Education and Director of Social Studies Education at Hofstra University. Dr. Singer will present “Teaching about the African American Civil Rights Movement in the Age of Common Core, Social Studies Frameworks and Ferguson, Missouri.” Additionally, Dr. Douglas Egerton, LeMoyne College, will present and lead a discussion on “Black Activists and National Reconstruction.” Dr. Henry Louis Taylor, Jr., University at Buffalo, will address the topic of “From the Underground Railroad to the Fight Against Neoliberal Racism: the Long Struggle for Black Liberation.”

Saturday’s workshop lineup includes more than a dozen leading professors as well as historians, authors and activists in the field.
