The Teacher Preparation Department and Early Childhood Club will be celebrating the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s annual “Week of the Young Child” with a series of lectures and workshops. All events are free and open to the campus community and the community at large. Refreshments will be served.
“Working as a Team When Children Need Behavior Support: Advice for Student Teachers” with Dr. Cecile Gleason
Tuesday, April 14 from 1 to 2 p.m, Higbee 100
This discussion will focus on the role of the student teacher when children need support to get along with peers, participate in activities, and regulate behavior. We’ll address how to talk with your cooperating teacher at the start of your placement about what social skill curriculum is in place, what behavioral approaches are in use, and what is expected of the student teacher when children need behavioral support. This is a discussion, not a presentation, so bring you experience and ideas! If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “What will I do now?,” this is the discussion for you!
“Brain Breaks: Movement Activities that Help Children Focus and Learn” presented by Meg Smith, M.S.
Wednesday, April 15, from 4 to 5 p.m., Higbee 100
Children learn best when given movement breaks during the day. Movement activities that cross the midline of the body help to integrate the two sides of the brain and develop balance and coordination. This program will introduce you to movements that assist children to refocus, re-energize, and learn.
“Starting Your Own Child Care Business” Presented by Anne Gresco, Capital District Child Care Coordinating Council
Thursday, April 16, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Higbee 100
This program will focus on the steps needed to start a child care center in your home. The regulations that apply to home child care will be discussed and several helpful tips will be provided. Anne will share her experiences as a family child care provider for over 22 years.
“The Sensory Diet” presented by Paula Buchanan, M.S., CCC-SLP
Friday, April 17, from noon to 1 p.m., Higbee 100
Welcome to the wonderful and wacky world of sensory development! We will talk about what the word “sensory” means and begin to identify children who avoid sensory information and children who crave continuous sensory input. In this lecture, you will learn about the seven sensory systems and how they interact and integrate. We will identify how sensory organization impacts learning, attention, and specific skills such as eating, playing, and participating in activities such as art and music. A discussion about how to establish a “diet” of opportunities to assist children in building a positive learning style for academic, social, and play skills. Prepare to get your hands “gooey” for this interactive session that combines lecture and hands-on learning.
