Emergency preparedness on campus

The safety of our students, faculty and staff is the number one priority here at Hudson Valley Community College. Personnel and plans to deal with emergencies on campus are in place around the clock, each and every day. In fact, our Emergency Preparedness Committee regularly meets to discuss procedures, plan with experts and community partners in emergency response, and conduct drills on campus. Still, every member of our campus community has a role in preventing or responding to an emergency situation.

To that end and in light of the recent tragedy at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, please take a moment to review important college resources that may be helpful in the event of an emergency. First, please review the college’s Emergency Information and Procedures web page and manual for faculty, staff and students. On the Public Safety site, you also can read our new Campus Safety Report with helpful information and statistics.

Finally, you’ll find an important notice in your pay check or pay stub envelope on Friday, Oct. 30, outlining procedures to follow in the unlikely event of an “active shooter” situation. That notice is not intended to cause undue alarm, but educate and raise awareness.

Communication is critical to preventing and responding to a crisis. Please take some time to review these important documents.

Thank you,
Drew
