Discussion Thursday on civil rights documentary film

All are welcome to attend a discussion moderated by Dr. Paul Murray, professor of Sociology at Siena College, on the award-winning film Freedom Riders. Dr. Murray, an expert in the 20th century civil rights movement, will lead the discussion in the Marvin Library Learning Commons Multipurpose Room on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Noon. A buffet lunch sponsored by the Black and Latino Student Union is available while supplies last.

The film is available for full-length viewing at Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice. The film is based on a book of the same title that also is available online from the collection of Dwight Marvin Library.

Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle is made possible through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The NEH’s Bridging Cultures initiative brings four outstanding films on the civil rights movement to communities across the United States (see http://createdequal.neh.gov). “Created Equal” encourages communities across the country to revisit and reflect on the long history of civil rights in America.

In addition, the exhibition Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963 was presented by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The exhibition, on view Aug. 24 – Oct. 2 in the Marvin Library Learning Commons, was made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of Bridging Cultures.
