Active Email Attack Alert: CryptoLocker

The CISO of SUNY has issued a notice that there are active email-based attacks on SUNY schools with payloads that contain new variations of the ransomware called CryptoLocker. This is the software that encrypts your files and then demands money to get the decryption key.

Now, more than ever, we must be diligent in our handling of emails from known and unknown sources. If you receive emails with attachments, you should question them even if you know the name of the sender. Senders can be spoofed and it could be an attachment from someone who has had their account compromised.

When in doubt, throw it out!
