Volunteer to be a part of Odyssey of the Mind!

Our local Odyssey of the Mind Tournament will take place Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Coxsackie-Athens School District.

Please help us assure a successful event by registering as a judge or volunteer at http://libguides.questar.org/arts/Odyssey and pass this on to anyone 18 or older who may be interested. It’s a lot of fun for everyone! If you have questions or need more information, you may contact Tournament Director Nancy Bush at 629-7681.

Odyssey of the Mind (OotM) is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students of all ages. It encourages students to use their imaginations and work in teams, learning skills that will be useful throughout their lives. Questar III coordinates the tournament for schools in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene Counties.

Teams participating in OotM create solutions to one of five “long-term” problems (a known problem that they work on for several months), as well as participate in the “spontaneous” part of the competition — a problem they solve “on the spot.” Judges are assigned to one of the five long-term or spontaneous problems, and attend a training session to hone their judging skills. They review the student performances and score the teams against their peers in the Primary Division (Kindergarten – Grade 2), or Divisions I (Grades 3-5), II (Grades 6-8), or III (Grades 9-12).

Our crew of volunteers is critical to the success of the tournament! Assignments can range from team registration or parking assistance first thing in the morning to selling Odyssey of the Mind merchandise throughout the day, serving as door keepers at problem sites or assisting with hallway/stairway flow throughout the day. Volunteers also are needed to help set up the tournament site in the afternoon and early evening of Friday, Feb. 26.  Whether you have just a little time or a whole day, we can find an assignment for you!
