President’s February report to the Board of Trustees

At the close of the spring All College Meeting, I encouraged everyone to enhance internal communication activities to facilitate better collaboration and cooperation across departments, and to improve participation in college events and activities.

Accordingly, I am sharing my report to the Board of Trustees and approved agenda items from the Board’s meeting held Tuesday, Feb. 23. You’ll see a resolution formalizing our request for an increase in New York State base aid – part of a SUNY-wide advocacy initiative this legislative session – as well as a spring enrollment update, many department-based accomplishments, and progress on larger projects including our Outdoor Athletic Complex and advanced manufacturing technology expansion.

I will continue to share these documents in the Campus Chronicle during months when the trustees meet. I ask that you also use the Chronicle to post news for employees, announcements to students and calendar items to the college website. Our Communications and Marketing office will host another series of CET workshops next month for those who seek training and a better understanding of campus communication vehicles.

Earlier in the month, I spoke to members of the Academic Senate about ways to foster a college culture that encourages greater collaboration. I believe this is best accomplished when we share information proactively, get out of our silos and work together to serve students in the best manner possible.

One example of this is my recommendation to the Senate for a New Student Orientation Assessment Task Force. We’re coming up on a year since the implementation of Orientation. We have listened to feedback and made improvements along the way, but there still is more work to be done. I will appoint four members for the Task Force, and the Senate Chair will do the same. That Task Force will bring forward recommendations for improvements to be implemented for the Spring 2017.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or ideas on how we can serve our students even better. I am looking forward to all of the Spring Semester events and celebrations.
