President’s March report to the Board of Trustees

It’s time again for me to share my monthly report to the Board of Trustees and approved agenda items from the meeting on Tuesday, March 22. Following are a few highlights or items of note that may already have appeared in the Campus Chronicle but bear repeating.

I am extremely pleased to inform everyone that the college has five students who have been selected to receive the 2016 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. They are: Brody O’Connor, Taylar Delisle, Josiah Dillon, Erika Pelletier and Erica Shudt. These students will be recognized at a ceremony in Albany this week.

The college’s final enrollment figures for Spring 2016 are now available. Total headcount is -3.1% behind Spring 2015 (10,523; -342) and -4.2% behind last year in FTE (6,894; -304). But, we exceeded budget projections — 10,106 in headcount (+417 = 10,523; +4.1%) and 6,851 in FTE (+43 = 6,894; +0.6%).

Discussions are continuing with Rensselaer County toward finalizing the sale of the Hy Rosenblum Center to the United Group, which will build and manage a student housing complex. We expect the county legislature to take up the issue in April.

The college submitted two more applications as part of the START-UP NY program. The companies are SimplyTel, LLC and ChannelEyes, LLC, and both will be located in the Quackenbush Building in Troy. So far, three companies have been approved for partnership with the college through START-UP NY.

Please keep reading – and submitting your own news items to – the Campus Chronicle. Anyone who would like more information about any topic in my monthly report is invited to contact Suzanne Kalkbrenner (629-4530, s.kalkbrenner@hvcc.edu) or stop by my office in the Guenther Enrollment Services Center.

Your ideas on how we can continue to improve always are welcome.
