Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 19 and 20, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Maureen Stapleton Theatre for Neil Simons’s “Rumors,” an upcoming production of the Theatre Club and Theatre Arts Program.
No experience or preparation is necessary. Auditioners will be asked to fill out an information sheet when they arrive, and then to read scenes from the play with fellow auditioners.
“Rumors” is a critically-acclaimed comic farce about an anniversary party for Charlie Brock, the deputy mayor of New York, and his wife, Myra. The difficulties begin when the first friends to arrive, Ken and Chris Gorman, discover that Charlie has shot himself in the ear and taken Valium (he’s out of it), Myra is missing, and there are no kitchen staff in the house preparing for the party. Ken and Chris try to figure out what’s going on, and then try to conceal the situation in order to prevent a scandal as other friends arrive and wonder what’s up. Everyone at the party does end up in the know, but then they have to decide what to do, especially when the police arrive.
For those interested in taking part as a technical or stage crew member for “Rumors,” an announcement will be shared on a meeting to discuss opportunities.
Characters in “Rumors”
Ken Gorman — a well-spoken attorney; a bit high strung.
Chris Gorman — Ken’s amiable spouse; a bit high strung.
Lenny Ganz — an accountant who wrecks his brand new BMW on the way to the party (and gets whiplash); somewhat hot-tempered and sarcastic, but likable.
Claire Ganz — Lenny’s spouse; a bit of a high society gossip.
Cookie Cusack — a celebrity chef with a bad back; a bit eccentric/dramatic.
Ernie Cusack — Cookie’s loving spouse, and a psychologist; a bit smug, but well-meaning.
Glenn Cooper — a politician preparing to run for the State Senate; ambitious, and hitting a rough patch in his relationship with his spouse.
Cassie Cooper — Glenn’s spouse; a bit jealous and insecure.
Officer Walsh — a vigorous, direct, seasoned cop.
Officer Pudney — a rookie cop.
