New Title IX guidelines for faculty and staff

Colleagues:

As President Matonak mentioned at the September All College Meeting, the federal government and SUNY have issued new guidance for college employees related to communicating with students about sexual assault, sexual violence, sexual harassment, dating and domestic violence and stalking. Please take a moment to read the information below and attached.

It is the duty of employees, and a requirement of the law, to report aforementioned incidents that they become aware of to the college’s Title IX Coordinator, Alex Popovics. Sometimes, a student may prefer to keep the situation confidential and receive assistance and guidance in that manner. If a student reports to a confidential source, the student will still have the option to additionally report the incident in various ways at the college and externally; however, if the student reports to an employee who is not a confidential source, the Title IX Coordinator must be notified by the employee. The Title IX Coordinator will then investigate the incident and the student forfeits the totally confidential option.

The attached information card explains in greater detail the guidelines for employees to follow in order to assist students in the best possible manner. A print copy will be enclosed in this week’s paycheck/stub envelope. Complete information is available online at http://www.hvcc.edu/catalog/title-ix.html.

Please share questions with Alex Popovics via email to a.popovics@hvcc.edu or call extension 7307.

Thank you.
