“Understanding Heroin, Addiction, and the Brain” on this evening, Dec. 12

All are welcome and encouraged to attend a special presentation — “Understanding Heroin, Addiction and the Brain” — on Monday, Dec. 12 in the McDonough Sports Complex. The event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. and is free.

Described as a “must see” for parents and community members, “Understanding Heroin, Addiction and the Brain,” will be hosted by Benita Zahn, News Channel 13 co-anchor and community health reporter, who will introduce several guest speakers and moderate a Q&A session. The keynote speaker will be Michael Nerney, a nationally-renowned expert in substance abuse education and prevention.

The event will address the current community crisis of heroin addiction. Attendees will learn that addiction is a disease that causes multiple changes within a user’s brain, and about the roles age and gender play in addiction. Treatment will take time, but recovery is possible.

Additional speakers and presentations will include:
— Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen Jimino
— Grant Jaquith, First Assistant United States Attorney
— “Chasing the Dragon,” film trailer presented by Richard Southwick, Assistant United States Attorney
— “There is Hope” presented by Eric Dyer

Event sponsors working in partnership with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York are:
NOPIATES Committee for Change
— Rensselaer County Heroin Coalition
Troy Drug Free Community Coalition
RADAR (Rensselaer Area Drug Awareness Reality Coalition)
New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force

This event is free and open to all!
Please plan on attending, and bring a friend. You’ll be glad you did.
