CET Workshop on March 8: Applying Copyright in Online Learning Environments

A lot has changed in regards to copyright laws over the last several years, regardless if that source is used for a traditional classroom or an online class. Simultaneously, there may be faculty and staff who are unfamiliar on how to use copyright material legally. To provide some clarity and guidance on this subject matter, The Center for Effective Teaching (CET) is offering a webinar through the American Library Association.

Applying Copyright in Online Learning Environments

Online platforms have become the base of operation for instruction of both face-to-face classes and distance education, yet current copyright law does not provide direct guidance on what you can legally upload into your course management system (CMS). Gretchen McCord, a lawyer and librarian, will break down the elements of CMS use and help you assess risk and analyze copyright law to ensure your CMS is within copyright regulations.

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

— apply fair use and other copyright exceptions to your decision making.
— make sound analogies from court decisions on brick-and-mortar cases.
— assess risk when using copyright-protected content.
