Are your leaves infected?

Recently, many Troy residents have noticed leaf spots and early defoliation from trees in our region. These symptoms are caused by Tar Spot of Maple (rhytisma), a fungus which affects the leaves of specific species of Maple trees in our city and region. Tar Spot rarely causes lasting damage to the tree, but heavy infections may result in leaves dropping early.

The Mayor’s Office has developed a fact sheet with assistance from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County which outlines symptoms of the infection and what you can do to combat Tar Spot to prevent additional trees being infected in the future. We encourage you to share this flyer with your friends, family and neighbors.

For more information or additional resources on the Tar Spot of Maple, please contact Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County at (518) 272-4210 or visit www.cce.cornell.edu.
