Members of the HVCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society volunteered at the Northeastern Regional Food Bank in Latham on January 26, 2022. With the new year came a new opportunity for them to help the community.
Each day the food bank receives truckloads of food donated from local farms and supermarkets. The donation of the day on Wednesday was potatoes: over 900 pounds! There was an abundant variety of red, sweet, Russet, and Yukon Gold potatoes. First, the volunteers carefully inspected each of the varieties of potatoes for quality and then sorted them into their respective boxes to prepare for distribution. Within the next day, all of the prepared boxes would be distributed to local agencies. The food bank receives requests from local food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency programs to help feed those in need. It was comforting to know that the huge potato donations were going to be distributed the next day to provide a warm, nourishing meal to those in the community.
The PTK volunteers took this opportunity to help the community, one of the core values of Phi Theta Kappa. With its purpose of developing leadership and service, Phi Theta Kappa promotes academic excellence and fellowship for all its members. This is why members are proud to say #IAMPTK!
