Advisory Committee Members Honored

Three Capital Region professionals were honored this week with Distinguished Service Awards for their work on Hudson Valley’s academic advisory committees. President Matonak presented the awards and Dr. Nancy Zimpher, Chancellor of the State University of New York, spoke about the vital role of community colleges and their community partnerships in the SUNY system.

Honorees during the annual Advisory Committee Reception Wednesday evening were:

John Oliver, vice-president of Capitaland Material Handling in Altamont, was recognized for his role as chair of the Respiratory Care Advisory Committee. A 30-year member of the committee and a graduate of the first class of Hudson Valley’s Respiratory Care program in 1973, Oliver has been a staunch supporter of the program, who consistently pushes for its continuous examination and improvement.

Andrew Rudack of SEMATECH and a four-year member of the Electrical Engineering Technologies Advisory Committee, was recognized for his willingness to work with the committee in any capacity needed. Rudack has helped students obtain jobs, has facilitated student exploration of nano tech careers and has helped to steer Hudson Valley’s new semiconductror program to fruition.

Cynthia Kilgallon, principal of School 18 in Troy, received the award for the breadth and depth of knowledge and experience she has shared with the Teacher Preparation Advisory Committee for the past eight years. She has been instrumental in the development of new and innovative education courses and of the Teaching Assistant Certificate program at Hudson Valley.

Each year, the college recognizes partners from business, industry, government and other institutions who lend a real-world perspective to advisory committees, allowing Hudson Valley’s academic leadership to keep programs up-to-date and prepare our students well, whether they plan to transfer to a four-year institution or to enter the workforce after graduation.
