The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness Committee met on March 22. The meeting minutes are as follows.
Dr. Margaret Geehan opened the meeting at 1 p.m. It was held via Zoom.
Middle States Update
Dr. McDonough, the president of a community college in New Jersey, will be Hudson Valley Community College’s Evaluation Team leader for Middle States and will make a preliminary visit to the college in fall 2022 to talk with the President and other selected people.
The Core Team will determine some good visitation dates for Dr. McDonough’s preliminary visit and for the big site visit in spring 2023. Dr. McDonough must be in receipt of a draft Self-Study Report before the preliminary meeting.
Membership
Members welcomed Dr. Hector Rodriguez to the Assessment & Institutional Effectiveness Committee.
Dr. Rodriguez came to HVCC in January as the Associate Dean of STEM. He has some background in assessment from an ABET perspective, and looks forward to seeing our approach to assessment and participating in the process.
Core Indicators regarding Graduation & Retention for 2022
Data regarding graduation was reviewed.
The group noted that graduation rates increased a bit despite COVID, and discussed what we can do to continue this trend.
Table 1.1.1 was shown shared and reviewed. The group questioned how each institution allowed for obstacles in graduation, including COVID.
Committee members also reviewed the AIE Handout table-by-table for feedback and discussion.
On Table 3.3.1, the graduation rates of first-time, full-time Students by ethnicity was broken down.
Table 3.3.2 contained the average peer institution versus HVCC’s graduation rate data.
On the 3.3.2 table, HVCC met all the benchmarks except for the graduation rates for “Hispanic and Latino” students and students of “2+ races.”
Ainsley Thomas suggested trying to determine which high school is producing the most successful students, examine what they are doing compared to other schools to determine what works for them. After this, we should work to emulate it.
Dr. Rodriguez asked what we do with/about the data for the Standards that we don’t meet? How do we work to improve on those things? Do we have plans in place to change these things?
Those who do not graduate, but do attend HVCC before transferring to a four-year school, become an attrition statistic. What do we do with and about this data? Note: this data can be obtained from the NSCH.
Survey Updates
The group reviewed the Assessment Survey line-by -ine and discussed whether each question needed a change in wording or meaning before being distributed.
The Academic Advising Surveys are almost finished, and were to be distributed no later than March 28.
The “Assessing the Assessment” Surveys are also due to go out soon.
The ESS Survey will close March 31.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:50PM
Respectfully submitted,
Caitlyn Gerardi
