April 3 to 6: The Week of The Young Child

The Education and Social Sciences Department, Education Club and Voices, A Library Lecture Series, are proud to present The Week of The Young Child at Hudson Valley Community College with a variety of events from Monday through Thursday, April 3-6.

All events are free and everyone is encouraged to attend!
We hope to see you there!

Attendees are encouraged to bring gently-used children’s books to any event for the Education Club’s Children’s Book Drive. Donation boxes also will be located in Higbee 100 and in front of the Student Activities office (CTR 210) from April 3-17. Donations will benefit local schools and childcare centers.

Education Job Fair
Monday, April 3 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Siek Campus Center
Join us at a job fair for Education majors. Representatives from local early childcare centers and schools will be on campus sharing information about their sites. All interested students are welcome and encouraged to attend! (Special thanks to the Center for Careers and Transfer for coordinating this event.)

Weaving Creativity and Creative Thought Throughout the Curriculum
Monday, April 3 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Professor Christine Saxe will present strategies to weave creativity and creative thought throughout the curriculum. Different types of creative modalities will be discussed. Learn how to make your classroom a place of wonder and discovery.

From Poverty to Sustainability: Building Lives, Leaders and Communities
Tuesday, April 4, 1 to 1:50 p.m.

Based on his 33 years of experience working with homeless and underserved men, women and children, Michael Saccocio, executive director/CEO of City Mission of Schenectady, will discuss strategies for converting divisive social situations into partnerships that create opportunities and build community. In addition, he will share stories of how purpose-driven individuals can use their adverse life experiences to inspire others to build better futures for themselves and their families. (This event is presented in collaboration with Voices, A Library Lecture Series.)

Understanding Children’s Sensory Needs for Success in the Classroom
Wednesday, April 5, 1 to 2 p.m.

Noelle Saxe, an occupational therapy student who has worked with children in her latest clinical rotation in Jacksonville, FL, will share what an occupational therapist does to help children learn and how to implement OT strategies in the classroom

Helping Children Handle Grief
Thursday, April 6, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Higbee 101
Professor Carla Gleason will discuss the difficult topic of handling death and dying and the grief process with young children. Current research and practices will be evaluated and explained.
