College Athletics: How we can best serve our college athletes

Did you know that a member of the basketball team may have had practice at 6 am that morning right before his or her 8 am class? And that softball players practice nights and weekends? Or that teams often don’t return to campus until midnight from away games? The Hudson Valley Community College Athletic Department serves 16 intercollegiate teams with approximately 300 student-athletes. A student-athlete’s commitment, which begins with workouts as early as August 1 each year, may not conclude until the last week of classes in the spring. The teams have games throughout the entire academic year including nights and weekends. Our athletes are hard working, dedicated students, and the Athletics Department has policies and programs in place to help ensure their academic success along with their development as athletes and as people. Please join Director of Athletics Kristan Pelletier, Assistant Director of Athletics Justin Hoyt, and Head Football Coach and Athletic Academic Coordinator Mike Muehling for this workshop on athletic programs at Hudson Valley and the demands and expectations for our student athletes as to academic progress and team eligibility. During this engaging workshop, find out more about the operations and infrastructure of the college’s intercollegiate athletic department and, more important, how faculty and staff can help support student athletes.

Public Speaking for Busy Professionals
You don’t always need a stage and a large audience to be speaking publicly. Often, we are called upon to present information at meetings or to make a good case for an idea–whether in front of a committee or a couple of colleagues. All of these are public speaking occasions. Very often, public speaking is dreaded, and folks sometimes limit themselves by avoiding the discomfort of speaking before others. In this workshop, you will learn ways to overcome fear of public speaking, how to organize your thoughts, and how to be heard–and have your thoughts respected.
