Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness (AIE) Committee Minutes

The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness (AIE) Committee met on June 26, 2018, at 1 p.m. The meeting minutes are as follows:

Dr. Geehan opened the meeting at 1 p.m. She reported that there was no update on Middle States. She then reviewed a proposed draft of the AIEC Charge, which was discussed at the previous meeting. The charge was modified in order to communicate a clear linkage between the Institutional Effectiveness Plan and the College’s broader Vision, Mission, Goals and Strategic Priorities. The proposed charge was accepted by the committee.

The updated charge is as follows:

AIE Committee Charge
The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness Committee’s broad charge is to nourish and sustain a culture of assessment. This committee is designed to support the continuous improvement of student learning, educational programs, and administrative and educational support services. These efforts shall be in full support of and guided by the Hudson Valley Community College Vision, Mission, Goals and Strategic Priorities articulated in the Preamble to the Hudson Valley Community College Institutional Effectiveness Plan.

To these ends, the Committee will:

  • Review and update the Institutional Effectiveness Plan as appropriate on an annual basis;
  • Produce an annual Institutional Effectiveness Report and keep the campus informed about institutional effectiveness efforts and activities;
  • Guide and support activities pertaining to compliance with Middle States standards of accreditation with the focus on the assessment of the student learning experience, institutional assessment, and the emphasis on continuous improvement;
  • Strengthen and support the college’s commitment to assessment with an emphasis on quality programs and service by providing oversight, guidelines and resources for program-, unit-level implementation of assessment and evaluation activities;
  • Ensure and assist with the utilization of assessment results to improve or strengthen programs on an institution-wide basis (closing the loop);
  • Annually review and update the college’s assessment-related resources and training for the campus community

Dr. Geehan then directed attention to the recently developed SUNY SCOA Institutional Effectiveness Rubric. Committee members engaged in an impromptu assessment of how the college’s IE effort measured up to the rubric in terms of the levels of compliance when compared with the goals. With 11 goals in three categories, the group reached agreement that we were in the “Proficient” or “Excelling” categories for six of 11 goals. A similar assessment of achievement in the remaining five goals will take place at a later meeting.

There was then discussion about the reporting and collection of four out of seven ISLO.

The meeting was adjourned at 2 p.m.

FUTURE MEETING DATES for Summer 2018 are July 24 and Aug. 7.
