The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness (AIE) Committee met on Septe. 25, 2018, at 1 p.m. The meeting minutes are as follows:
Dr. Geehan opened the meeting at 1 p.m., stating that a Middle States Update package of information had been provided on the MSCHE website portal. She then proceeded with a goal of reviewing the remaining Core Indicators beginning with 2.4 – Student Satisfaction
This led to discussion about the eight questions currently included within CI# 2.4. It was noted that the SUNY SOS would be taken in Spring ’19 and that therefore a Hudson Valley SSS would not be taken in 2019. There was not strong consensus to eliminate any of CI#2.4, but a recommendation to consider modifying question #6 to qualify respondents as responsible for financing college vs. not responsible.
The discussion turned to student satisfaction and retention. Mr. Thomas brought up student challenges including homelessness and food insecurity, and the group talked about ways to identify and help students to overcome issues that impact their persistence. The discussion around the table included comments about the need for a cohesive effort to assist students who have financial, family, transportation, and other challenges and who don’t know where to turn. While there are many retention initiatives in departments and units across the campus, the need for an organized, cross-campus group or committee to focus on this issue was agreed upon by the group. This focus should collect data to measure and display the extent to which student challenges occur and formulate strategies to resolve them as effectively as possible.
At the next meeting the committee will continue the evaluation/analysis of remaining CIs.
The meeting was adjourned at 2PM.
The next meeting was scheduled for Oct. 9 along with successive Fall 2018: Oct. 23, Nov. 6, Nov. 27 and Dec. 11.
