The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness Committee met on Nov. 24, 2020.
The meeting minutes are as follows:
Dr. Margaret Geehan opened the meeting at 1 p.m.
Dr. Geehan first gave a Middle States Update. She updated the group on the fact that the Core Team recently completed Middle States-related courses and will be using the information to aid this group, complete the Self-Study Design Document, and to prepare for Middle States’ next visit.
Next, Dr. Geehan reviewed in detail the 2014 Institutional Effectiveness Plan’s IE Timeline Document with the group. The definition of “Assessment” was reviewed (for the purposes of updating this document), as were other parts of the document. Brian Vlieg volunteered to update the IE process flow chart included in the Plan. Other minor changes were made throughout. This document can be provided if requested.
The due date of the final unit plans for each department were temporarily changed as well due to the COVID pandemic. Because the assessment/unit plan process is closely tied to the budget process, it is important that it be complete before the budget disposition process begins. This process begins later in the year now, due to personnel changes in the Finance area. The budget process has been changed from January to later in the spring, but it still requires approval from Rensselaer County in late spring, as well as the Governor.
The subject of student goal attainment was discussed. This has been a topic of the committee before. Many community college students don’t follow a traditional path; some come for a few courses to update skills and then leave. They become an attrition statistic, but they have indeed achieved their goals. Many transfer before actually graduating — again, becoming attrition statistics, despite finding success at Hudson Valley and achieving their goals. Kathy Petley suggested that the CRM might offer a way to get at this very important issue. The college should make sure it is actively asking students what they want to accomplish during their time here and then take steps to ensure they have every means of doing so and documenting it.

The final meeting for 2020 will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
