The Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness (AIE) Committee held its first meeting of the fall semester on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
The minutes for this meeting are presented below.
l. Middle States Update
Dr. Geehan informed the committee of the upcoming Middle States Conference in Philadelphia. She, Dr. Green and Jim Macklin plan on attending.
ll. SCoA Update
Dr. Geehan announced the upcoming SCoA session on curriculum mapping that will take place at Mohawk Valley Community College on Oct. 24. If anyone is interested in attending, we will begin curriculum mapping of the ISLOs in every degree program this fall.
lll. Review the Updated Institutional Effectiveness Recommendations for the 2017 IE Report
The committee discussed the recommendations, with a few questions and subsequent discussion about how individual initiatives, as well as college-wide initiatives, would be assessed and by whom. Further discussion ensued about elevating findings and conclusions to senior staff for inclusion in ongoing campus operations and policy.
lV. Review of Middle States Standards
Dr. Green and Dr. Geehan led discussion on the Middle States Standards, with focus on the assessment aspect for each standard. Lengthy discussion took place regarding each of the criteria subtending the standards. Focus was on identifying if there exists a responsible entity on campus or an appropriate deliberative body (committee) which implements or manages the particular policy or practice embodied among the criteria. Next was discussion on whether each of the criteria were being assessed or able to be assessed. The committee covered Standards 1-4, but left further discussion for the next meeting on Standards 5-7.
Discussion also occurred on publishing college-wide committee minutes in the Campus Chronicle, including committees such as the AIE Committee, Enrollment Committee, Strategic Technology Committee, etc. This will provide better communication of information and enhance transparency on the campus. Also discussed was assessment of the committees themselves—are they satisfying their charge? The AIE Committee charge will be examined next meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 2 p.m.
The committee subsequently met on Sept. 19 and minutes for that meeting will be posted when available. The next AIE Committee will be on Oct. 3, at 1 p.m. in ADM130.
