Middle States Update
Joe Stenard, Kathy Petley and Geehan gave a brief update on the revision of the Self-Study Design document.

Review: 2021 Employee Satisfaction Survey (means only)

  • Meg Mann went over the mean responses to the 2021 Employee Satisfaction Survey with the group.
  • The consensus was that the means look good. The group discussed why people skipped some demographic questions (are they afraid of someone knowing who wrote what they did and experiencing some repercussions?). If there are other factors, the group doesn’t know why people skipped what they did. However, it was noted that the percentage of respondents skipping some potentially identifying items has decreased from previous years, after increasing steadily since at least 2016.
  • The group spent reviewed the questions in the survey one by one and provided each other feedback on how they would word things in the future, or on why they thought a question got the survey response that it did. Some questions were reworded for use in a future year’s survey.
  • The group also discussed whether the response rate had improved or not on each of the questions. It was noted that for many, if not most, the level of satisfaction had improved from the previous years. Dennis Wax suggested perhaps the change was somehow due to COVID-19, for example, respondents’ level of satisfaction with civility on campus had increased. Was this due to very few people being on campus? Screenshots of this data (shared via screen share during the meeting) can be provided upon request.
  • Overall, the majority of the means for the survey items had increased, but this surprised Petley and Geehan (who had access to comments, which at that point still needed to redacted) because by reading the comments, one would not have thought that the level of satisfaction with many of the items had actually improved a bit. The comments tended, in general, to be negative. This could perhaps be because people only take the time to comment if they are upset about something and want it fixed, while if they are content they don’t bother to comment.

The meeting adjourned at 2 p.m.

The final meeting of the Spring 2021 semester scheduled for May 24 was cancelled.
The committee’s next meeting will take place in Fall 2021 at a time to be determined.

Respectfully submitted,
Caitlyn Gerardi
